My relationship with popcorn falls into the love-hate category — love eating it, hate picking it out of teeth afterward — but when I came across Pop20’s line of infused popcorn, I felt compelled to give it a go. The first order of business was deciding which flavor to buy, no easy trick when your choices include Theater Butter, Black Truffle & Sea Salt, Cheesy Jalapeño, Aged White Cheddar, and Mexican Street Corn, but eventually I settled on the latter two.
Let’s start with what I liked. For one thing, it tastes really good. The White Cheddar oozes with cheesiness, and it would’ve been easy to down the whole bag (but at 100 mg of THC per bag, that would’ve left ya boy on the floor in a slobbering heap). I didn’t get a ton of corn flavor from the Mexican Street Corn, but it did have a nice kick to it.
Another plus is on the nutritional side. At less than a gram of carbohydrates per 10 mg serving and no sugar, these savory snacks are great if you’re on a low-carb diet.
Now then, the not-so-good.
First, there’s the texture. Not sure about you, but I like my popcorn crispy and crunchy. That’s typically how it comes, even the pre-popped kind like Skinny Pop, but Pop20’s is soft. At first, I thought I’d gotten a stale bag, but the second bag was the same way, so I can only conclude that’s by design. Why would they do that? Your guess is as good as mine.
Toss this in a toaster oven on low heat (~200 degrees) for a few minutes to crisp it up. Just keep an eye on it so it doesn’t burn.
Next is dosing. A 10 mg serving is supposedly 17 kernels, but that depends on the size of each kernel, and then there’s the problem you face with any popcorn: broken pieces. How do you count those? The upshot is getting the dose right with this product is tricky, not to mention a bit of pain; I mean, do you really want to stand there counting out 30 or 40 kernels of popcorn?
Last, and related to dosing, is the effect. I took my standard 20 mg dose (or as close as I could figure), and the hit was mild. I supplemented the popcorn with a 10 mg gummy to get the high I was looking for.
I think it could be fun to have a few bags of Pop20 on hand for a party or binge-watching TV with friends, but the shortcomings make it more of a novelty than a go-to.
